Juliet Askenase, LICSWJuliet Askenase

I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years experience in working with children, adolescents, and adults.  I have extensive experience working with special needs children and adolescents, as
I have directed a foster care program for teens and supervised an adoption program.  I have worked in both in-patient and outpatient mental health and have supervised clinicians in both settings.

My treatment approach is a cognitive behavioral model and my initial focus is to build a trusting, caring relationship with each client, so that we can explore problems and strengths.  With children and adolescents, I use games and play therapy to help understand their fears and anxieties, and also to model behavior and social skills.  Family sessions are often included to improve parent-child communications and to reinforce the parents as crucial members of their child’s treatment team.

In working with adults, I focus on problem-solving and an active treatment plan which reflects individual strengths and needs in achieving behavioral change and greater resilience.  I look to build a repertoire of coping skills using both behavioral and cognitive behavioral techniques.  Stress management and relaxation techniques are very helpful especially where there is a history of trauma or loss.

I have a special interest in working with adoption issues, child development issues, ADHD, and mood disorders.

I came to the United States nearly 30 years ago.  I did my Bachelor’s in Social Work at St. Andrews University in Scotland and received my Masters in Social Work from the London School of Economics.
